Melrose Interiors on repurposing post-production carpet waste
Melrose Interiors based in Bradford (Yorkshire) is adding a further ‘string to its bow’ and launching a new product range and service called ‘Relay’. With the increasing awareness and social responsibility towards the environment, consumers and retailers are now looking for alternative product ranges with more environmental credentials.
The Relay brand will focus on reusing and recycling surplus pre-consumer carpet stock with a view to reducing and re-purposing carpet waste. As a member of Carpet Recycling UK, in 2018 Melrose was awarded take-back partner of the year and highly commended recycler of the year for its role in recovering pre-consumer carpet from production over makes, roll-ends and fitters offcuts that otherwise would have ended in landfill or incineration.
Commenting on its relationship with Carpet Recycling UK, Andy Murphy MD said “We are committed to reducing the carpet waste footprint. The trade association’s aim is to increase the recycling of carpet waste across the UK while developing a circular economy for these products”.
The Relay brand, backed by internal logistics firm Ping Logistics, is able to offer its customers a take-back scheme using reverse logistics. This take-back scheme will provide customers with a fully transparent and audited process of where the old carpet and rugs can be recycled. Eventually it is hoped that the developments in single polymer carpets will allow the brand to provide a circular service where items collected can be processed back into carpet and textile flooring products, or potentially be used in other industries. By offering a take-back scheme this will prevent the old carpets being contaminated with other materials at household waste recycling centres or by waste management companies.
The range of Relay products include doormats, runners, and a range of medium, large and XL options to suit a variety of living areas. These are already stocked by retailers such as George Home, Argos, Very and Tesco.
