Mayfield Floors working with Tarkett on carpet tile take back

UK wide specialist commercial flooring contractor Mayfield Floors of Stockport joined Carpet Recycling UK as a member in 2017.  Already recycling vinyl offcuts through Recofloor, Anthony Francis MD recognised an opportunity to offer take back of carpet tile waste to customers and through Carpet Recycling UK was connected to circular economy leader Tarkett’s take back service which is known as ReStart®.

Speaking to Adam Kelly, Warehouse Manager, it is very positive to hear that Mayfield Floors has developed systems to enable fitters to bring back and sort the carpet tiles and part tiles for collection by Tarkett. 95% of the carpet tile waste they handle from their projects is sorted and prepared for collection by Tarkett, only a small percentage cannot be handled due to the volume of screed adhered to the backing.

Adam recognises that after a period of training, the floor fitting team at Mayfield Floors is now proactively bringing back and sorting wastes as a valued product and this is showing in the increased recorded volumes of materials diverted from landfill.  As well as carpet tile waste, Mayfield Floors is also sorting and diverting vinyl, card and plastic waste into new uses.  “We recognise the green credentials offered by the service we offer to our customers” says Adam, “any certificates provided by Tarkett are displayed at our site along with the membership logos for Carpet Recycling UK and Recofloor which are included in our marketing materials and branding.  “When it comes to arranging collections, it is quite simple.  It is a case of emailing Tarkett to advise of volume available, booking in the collection and loading the pallets using a fork-lift truck”.

Anthony Francis MD comments “working with these schemes is helping to save money, save waste and raise the green credentials of the company to our clients.  We recognise that materials harnessed from this waste are being used as a resource in new applications which is very important to us.”

“Our certificates from Carpet Recycling UK, Recofloor and ISO14001 are fundamental in tendering for new business to install confidence in the potential client that we will keep to our environmental commitments.”

Ross Dight, Technical & Sustainability Director, Tarkett UK&I comments: “We have developed a strong relationship with Mayfield Floors over a number of years now. We see Mayfield Floors as a forward-thinking contractor keen on changing traditional habits within the flooring industry, with regards to recycling opportunities through schemes like ReStart. We’re also really pleased to see the value that Mayfield feels that ReStart provides, not only in terms of waste management, but also towards their own environmental and sustainability credentials, which they can then demonstrate to their customers.

The tiles we collect from Mayfield are sorted into fibre types. Nylon 6 carpet tiles are sent through Tarkett’s Carpet Recycling Centre, where the yarn is separated from the backing, processed, then sent to yarn manufacturer Aquafil, for regenerating into 100% recycled ECONYL. Bitumen backing is used as high calorific fuel in the cement industry, whereas our DESSO Ecobase, a Cradle to Cradle Gold certified TM backing, has been designed to be fully recycled back into EcoBase backing. This fully closed-loop solution demonstrates active participation in the Circular Economy, and addresses concerns over resource scarcity.  Non-nylon 6 tiles are used as a high calorific fuel for the cement industry.
