UKSFA members unite to develop flooring identification standard

UKSFA members are backing the development of a standard approach to flooring product identification, following a recent survey of manufacturer and distributor members.

The response was almost unanimous, with members recognising the benefits of a consistent identification system across the industry.

Work on the issue began in 2025, with UKSFA sharing information and ideas with industry partners in the EU and USA. California has since agreed on a flooring backstamping protocol, adding further momentum to the work.

Effective product identification will be increasingly important throughout a flooring product’s life, from manufacture and installation through to reuse, recycling and end-of-life.

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) will eventually provide detailed product information, but accessing that information could be as simple as scanning a QR code, barcode or other data carrier. The challenge is ensuring identification remains accessible when flooring is removed, particularly where products have been fully adhered to the floor.

As reuse and circularity become increasingly important, UKSFA will support members through its working groups to develop a practical UK standard for flooring identification, helping to make product recovery, reuse and end-of-life management more efficient and cost-effective.

UK Sustainable Flooring Alliance is the only membership association dedicated to helping the UK textile and resilient flooring sector become more sustainable.
