Wool carbon value research

New British Wool research has revealed that wool has a much lower carbon footprint than previously estimated, but with Important caveats for carpet.

The Carbon Footprint of British Wool report provides an important contribution to ongoing discussions around sustainable materials, particularly as more brands, retailers and specifiers seek accurate environmental data for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and carbon-budgeted projects.

The report highlights how understanding the true carbon footprint of wool is increasingly critical in sectors such as fashion, agriculture and interior design, where sustainability claims must be backed by robust evidence.

However, while the results are encouraging for wool as a raw material, it is essential to note that the study focuses on pure, unprocessed wool. Wool carpets, by contrast, typically include additional materials and manufacturing processes that contribute to their overall carbon footprint. These factors mean the carbon profile of finished wool carpets cannot be directly compared to the figures presented in this research.

This work follows previous concerns that wool carpets were being disadvantaged by disproportionately high carbon values, particularly as designers and clients begin to set carbon budgets alongside financial ones. British Wool’s latest findings will help advance the conversation, offering a more accurate baseline for future assessments and industry decision-making.

The full report provides detailed insights into methodology, assumptions and opportunities for improved environmental transparency across the supply chain.  Please visit www.britishwool.org.uk to find out more.
