DEFRA Cracks Down on Fly-Tipping

This week (29 April), the Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP announced a major crackdown on fly-tipping and illegal waste operations. Councils will soon work alongside police to seize and crush vehicles used by waste criminals. The initiative will also deploy drones and mobile CCTV to track down offenders and prevent repeat offences.

To make enforcement more effective, a fast-track review has been launched to remove red tape currently preventing councils from taking swift action. Under new plans, those caught fly-tipping will bear the cost of seizing and disposing of their vehicles – saving local authorities and taxpayers thousands. Additionally, illegal waste operators could face up to five years in prison.

How to responsibly dispose of flooring waste

For homeowners and small businesses looking to dispose of carpet and textile waste responsibly, they should investigate the network of Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the UK – many of which now accept flooring materials.

To support this, the UK Sustainable Flooring Alliance (UKSFA) has launched www.takemyflooring.co.uk, a helpful tool that makes it easy to find your nearest HWRC accepting carpet, artificial grass, and other flooring waste.
