The Environmental Agency withdrew RPS 248 the regulatory position statement covering the use of shredded waste carpet in equestrian surfacing on 19th January due to the perceived risk of chemical and microplastic contaminants within waste carpet. RPS 248 was always a temporary measure under continuous review.
The EA confirmed their decision to remove permission was prompted by analysis of samples taken from waste testing which was necessary under the conditions to operate under RPS 248. In 2021, we estimated that circa. 60,000 tonnes of carpet and textile flooring waste was diverted from landfills through this process. CRUK is now working with researchers and the industry to find alternative, sustainable outlets for this waste.
