Hosted by ege Carpets and Mix Interiors in July, Carpet Recycling UK Manager Adnan Zeb-Khan was invited to attend a roundtable discussion at ege’s showroom in London to discuss the topic of waste management and the circular economy with designers and architects.

The discussion was well attended by a number of key designers and architects within London and the key theme of the conversation was around ‘do specifiers have a duty to put forward more sustainable ideas to their clients and what are manufacturers doing to address the issue or waste?’

Richard Strong, Southern Regional Manager at ege commented during discussion “Here in the UK, we are fortunate to be a leader in respect of diverting carpets from landfill, a large part of this is thanks to Carpet Recycling UK – something ege is proud to be a partner and founding member of.

Following the event, which Adnan found very enjoyable – “the first face to face event with lively discussion in a while!”, Adnan invited Josie Lees, Senior Designer at MCM to present and give the designer point of view within the Carpet Recycling UK “booth” as part of the CFJ Live Expo.

Josie commented to Adnan “It’s so important to think about reuse and repurposing at the beginning of projects before we even begin to design. Creating inspiring interiors for our clients is always important but we must be creative about how we can do this without causing further damage to our planet and being wasteful of our finate resources.

Taking a reuse-first attitude to design, we should explore what is available on site and through recycling schemes and vintage resellers too. Extending the useful life of materials and products is a great way to reduce our impact.  If it isn’t possible to reuse whatever is already on site in the new project, we need to ensure that it gets reused, repurposed or recycled responsibly.

When we design with new materials or products, we should always consider what will happen to that at the end of its useful life as that product – has the manufacturer designed for disassembly? Do they run take-back schemes? Is it a high-quality product which will hold its value as a material for repurposing?

It is essential we work in this way for future of the planet but it will also save our clients’ money on current and future fit outs”
