In January 2023 we will survey our network and the wider waste management sector to collect UK carpet and textile flooring waste landfill diversion tonnages for 2021.

The 2023 survey will reach out to reuse, recycling and waste companies to understand the volumes segregated and processed for the various outlets and we will report on the findings in the summer.  To avoid any duplication of figures, we may request additional information and we are grateful for your proactive support with this.

Verifying tonnage POM

We will request total meterage/tonnage placed onto the market (POM) in the UK from the manufacturers and distributors to verify the total amount of carpet and textile flooring waste arising in the UK for the year.  We will also be exploring the possibility of breaking this information down further into sub-categories which will allow us to report back you on the amount of broadloom, commercial tiles, events, underlay, rugs etc.  With the addition of another flooring group in 2023, collaboration will be from 80% of the market which will help us to verify the figures for 2021.   We are expecting the POM figure to be higher due to market trends following the Covid Pandemic.

Companies will be asked for help to confirm average weights for the various types of textile flooring so that we can verify 467,000t reported for 2020.  Flooring contractors will be requested to help as well to confirm tonnages.

Environmental consultancy Oakdene Hollins will again collect tonnages from additional sources such as local authority treatment through RDF, SRF and incineration, and will combine all information received in a confidential manner.  Oakdene Hollins brings in-depth experience of working with us previously and with other sectors in this data collection and collation field, such as The Bed Federation and we are looking forward to working with them again.

Please do help us by responding as quickly and comprehensively as possible.  We are mindful that the better the data we can collect from the sector, the better we can represent you at Government level when it comes to discussing policy such as Extended Producer Responsibility.

Presentation of results

All information provided through the survey will be held in strict confidence and only used to convey total waste arising and landfill diversion figures for the whole sector, split into outlets including reuse, plastics recovery, non-wovens, equestrian and energy from waste.  We hope to present the results at the next annual conference to take place at the end June 2023.

If you have any questions about the forthcoming survey, please do ask us.  info@carpetrecyclinguk.com
