When Carpet Recycling UK was founded, only 2% of textile flooring waste was being diverted from landfill and the focus of the non-profit membership association was initially on post-manufacture carpet and textile flooring waste.   Soon after attention turned to post-installation offcuts and post-consumer waste and we have now been helping the contract flooring sector for more than ten years, working alongside the Contract Flooring Association (CFA).  In 2019 it was independently verified and reported that 65% of all textile flooring waste was being diverted from landfill, a great achievement for our members and the whole sector.  We remain focussed on helping this sector become more sustainable by collaborating with more manufacturers and flooring contractors.

The CFA platform is invaluable to us, where inclusion at its events and within publications which include CFJ, Members’ Handbook, Specifier Guide and Sustainability Guide allows us to get our message to its membership and wider network, promoting textile flooring products which are designed for recycling or with higher levels of recycled content, and our recycling members who offer reuse and recycling solutions for commercial flooring in the UK.   Some of our recycling members offer graded quality carpet tiles for reuse in a variety of developments.  Developers and designers are specifying these tiles to save on cost and the use of new resources.
Carpet Recycling UK membership has grown through CFA, in fact 25% of our members are mutual members of CFA.
“For the CFA and for our whole industry, the sustainability agenda is one that’s shot up our priority list in recent years, so I’m delighted we have been able to lead the way by partnering with Carpet Recycling UK for the last ten years,” says Richard Catt, CEO of the CFA. “Improving industry performance on waste, recycling and re-using materials that have not reached end of life are all important areas in which our industry can respond to the climate challenge and help the sector work towards the Government target of net zero by 2050. CRUK tick all of these boxes and so we are happy to recognise the important work of Carpet Recycling UK in our industry and work with them to help members develop a more sustainable approach to business.”
