A project based in Cardiff City Centre run by Ty Krishna Cymru has recently benefited from reused mixed grade carpet tile planks and laminated flooring scraps donated by longstanding Carpet Recycling UK member Greenstream Flooring CIC.

The ATMA Lounge provides a tranquil environment and is based in The Capitol Centre in Queen Street. The space will be used to assist and spread awareness for Food For Life, which provides nutritious, plant-based meals for local people in need.  It was launched on 21 November 2020 and includes upcycled furniture, original artwork, a beautiful study area and recycled flooring from Greenstream Flooring.

Evie Thomson, Project Co-ordinator at The Atma Lounge, takes up the story on how Greenstream got involved: “Greenstream Flooring was recommended to us by one of our wonderful volunteers and we loved the ethos.  Whilst refurbishing the café we wanted to recycle and upcycle as much as possible, so sourcing our flooring from a company that has this at the heart seemed like the perfect fit.

“Meeting Ellen (Ellen Petts, Founder and Managing Director at Greenstream) and seeing how enthusiastic she was about our Food For Life and ‘The Atma Lounge’ was really encouraging.  After visiting to assess our old flooring, Ellen was really helpful in advising what would be suitable, being creative and finding the best options for us.

“Being an independent charity with minimal funds, Ellen really helped make this affordable by donating half the flooring, which we could not be more grateful for. The laminate was donated from scraps that would otherwise have been at risk of going to landfill.”

Evie continues “We are extremely pleased with the finished result. It has lifted the entire atmosphere of the space and brought the overall café together. Customers regularly comment on how impressed they are with both the carpet and laminate.  The Atma Lounge can now fully function with a Food For Life café, zero-waste shop, and wellbeing hub. We will be able to distribute nutritious, plant-based meals, offer a sustainable way to shop and provide resources on mindfulness, meditation, yoga and lifestyle management.”

Environmental impact:

  • 40 m2 reused mixed grade carpet tile planks for a mixed floor
  • 60 m2 of laminate flooring scraps used which would have otherwise been sent to landfill, which were donated by Greenstream
  • Total embedded carbon saving compared to buying new 1.8 tonnes.

A founding member of Carpet Recycling UK, Greenstream Flooring CIC picked up the Reuse Member of the Year award for the sixth time for demonstrating successful take back and reuse of carpet tiles from construction and refurbishment projects, which delivers the best environmental option for carpet and carpet tiles, as well as important social benefits.  Our congratulations to you and your team Ellen!
